Can drinking coffee help you avoid Florida DUI charges?

Have you ever heard people talk about ways to get out of a DUI? The only guaranteed way is to avoid drinking and driving entirely, of course, but some people will come up with tactics that they believe can help them avoid charges, even if they have been drinking.

One of the suggestions that you may have heard is to drink a cup of coffee. People will sometimes say that, if you are leaving the bar, you should go to a nearby coffee shop and order a large cup of black coffee. Drinking it will help your BAC go down so that you are not impaired and you will not be arrested on DUI charges. But does this actually work?

Coffee has no effect on your BAC

No, this does not work at all. It is just a common myth. The truth is that drinking coffee will not affect your BAC in any way. The only thing that really works is time. If you have a BAC that is over the legal limit, you just need to wait for it to go down.

So why do people fall for the myth about drinking a cup of coffee? One potential reason is that it does take time to walk to a coffee shop, purchase the coffee and then drink it. If someone spends an hour doing this, their BAC will likely go down slightly just because of the time their body has had to metabolize the alcohol.

Additionally, caffeine can help to overcome some of the fatigue issues that come along with drinking. Someone may become a bit more alert or awake, and they confuse this as being sober.

But the reality is that their BAC would still be over the legal limit. If you find yourself facing DUI charges in Florida, be sure you understand your legal defense options.
