Financial views can lead to marital conflict and divorce

When couples have very different financial views, it can cause marital strife. This is why it is important for them to talk about it in advance. But even when doing so, they may not be fully open about their views, or those views could change over time.

What sometimes happens is that couples find themselves in conflict. One person likes to spend, and the other likes to save, for example. On one side, the saver feels like the spender is wasting all of their hard-earned money. On the other hand, the spender feels like they are constantly being attacked for spending money on the things that they enjoy in life.

Can these views coexist?

Some couples do find ways to make these views coexist. They may agree to compromise. After all, neither of them is necessarily right or wrong. The problem simply lies in the fact that two married people who have such different views may encounter conflicts over how they are using family funds.

When these conflicts do happen, they can increase the stress level in the marriage. This can lead to more disagreements and fights, or resentment can build up over time. Eventually, it is this conflict that leads to the end of the marriage, even if the couple is technically doing well financially. Additionally, if they do end up facing financial challenges, one partner may blame the other, so this can be the catalyst for a divorce.

In this type of divorce case, dividing marital assets can become complicated. Couples who are splitting up need to make sure they understand all of their legal options and their rights.
