Remember these important points about custody battles

Going through a divorce while you have children still living at home means that you’ll have to try to figure out what’s going to happen with the kids. Some parents are able to work together to come up with a parenting plan. Others have to go through a contentious process to get things settled.

Regardless of what type of custody matter you’re going through, there are a few points that you must remember.

Put the children first

The only focus that you should have when working on custody matters is the children. You and your ex should try to become a parenting team so you can ensure the kids have what they need to thrive. If they see that you’re going to work with each other, it might quell some of their fears about the future. They may not have to worry about what will happen if both parents are there for special events, such as school plays or sporting events.

Plan for positive parenting time

The time you have with your children likely won’t be as much as what you had when you were married to their other parent. You’ll have to find ways to maximize the time you have together. This doesn’t mean that you always have to go out and do things or spend money. Instead, quiet time at home might be just as beneficial.

Battling with your ex for custody of your children is a stressful experience. Be sure that you learn the options that you have at each step of the process so you can do what you feel is best for your children. Working with someone who’s intimately familiar with cases similar to yours can help you as you try to sort everything out.
